Deacs pursue Ward's teammate
Deland (Fla.) was good to Tom Elrod and the Demon Deacons Wednesday, Feb. 01 when James Ward signed with Wake Forest, and they are hopeful the pipeline continues into the 2013 recruiting class with all-purpose back Jojo Kemp.
Elrod, who was also Ward's primary recruiter for the Deacs, offered Kemp a scholarship Tuesday, May 29.
"He [Elrod] is a great coach," Kemp said. "I've talked to him and he seems like a really nice guy. He is not blowing smoke up my behind. He cares about you as a person; not only as an athlete. I'm ready to get to know him. Maybe we can have two Deland all-stars at Wake Forest."
The 5-foot-10, 189-pounder, who is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, has never been to Wake, but is hoping to make the trip to Winston-Salem sometime this summer.
Kemp claims 20 scholarship offers.
"Right now the ones that are standing out to me are Kentucky, South Florida, Wake Forest and Arizona State," Kemp said.
The school he chooses needs to have good chemistry throughout the team and coaching staff and it must feel like home. However, Kemp said a school's distance from his home will not affect his decision.
"I don't only want to be successful as a football player, but I want to also be successful in life as a person," Kemp said.
He hopes to narrow his list of choices down by the end of summer, so he can possibly make a decision in August or whenever he feels the time is right.
"I think I'm an every-down back," Kemp said. "I like to be physical."
Kemp added Elrod told him he would fit in well with Wake as a downhill runner and pass-catcher out of the backfield.
He rushed for 1,500 yards and 17 touchdowns to help Deland to a second-round appearance in the state playoffs and a 10-2 record last season.
