2009 Tiger Mailbag: 20th Edition
Each Thursday, PowerMizzou.com publisher Gabe DeArmond will answer questions from subscribers in our Tiger Mailbag. This feature will allow for longer, more in-depth answers than you may get on the message board on a daily basis. To have your question in next week's mailbag, send an email to Gabe at firstname.lastname@example.org. On to this week's inquiries:
mizzoupat asks: I know you don't like to do percentages on recruits.... but we need something to keep us going. Where do you place McCay and Lucas at this point, not that we will hold you to it or anything.
Not only do I not like to do percentages on recruits, but I won't do them. I'm sure the not holding me to it comment was tongue-fully-in-cheek. I'd say the Tigers have a very good shot at Lucas, as I have all along. I don't know if I can say they're a certain leader, but I think they're in good shape. I've also said all along that I think Oklahoma is the biggest threat. I think the Sooners are also in play with McCay. He's a tougher one to handicap for a couple of reasons. First of all, I have not talked to him as much as I have Lucas. Second, with the death of his father, I imagine recruiting is very much on the back burner and that event may have changed his priorities and what he's looking for in a school (again, from an outsider's view). So I can't give you a good handle on McCay right now, other than to say I think it's a good sign that he came to Missouri's camp and that the Tigers seem to be in the mix, though if you wanted percentages, I'd go higher on Lucas.
tk cowboy asks: In this upcoming class of DL out of who Mizzou offered who do you think will sign with MIZZOU, and who do you think they are still going to offer at DL. Do you think they possibly go after someone like Kenny McClendon?
McClendon is a guy I'm going to be watching closely at camp this weekend. He's one of those kids that might be on the verge of an offer and could tip the scales in his favor with a good performance. I think the Tigers have an excellent shot with Kony Ealy, Matt Hoch and Dominique Jones. Adding in Lucas Vincent, that would make four defensive linemen in this class. I think they'd add maybe one more (this class might be slightly smaller based on number of scholarships available). Obviously if any or all of the above go elsewhere, it opens up the possibility of other offers.
mjkstl asks: A week or so ago, people were posting how much of a genious coaches TJ & EE were, then many were 2nd guessing their pitching choices one game later. The same applies to other Mizzou coaches as well. We see the same posts after every football or basketball loss. Is this typical of all college fans across all of the teams or are Mizzou fans just cantankerous by nature?
Welcome to sports. Fans tend to form more of an emotional bond with players and don't want to lay the blame on the players as quickly. I think this is even more true in college where the players have chosen to attend the school they're at and they don't get paid. I think coaches probably get too little credit when things go well and too much blame when they go poorly. But guess what? They're the only people on the college teams who are actually getting paid for this. They all know this is part of the game and what they signed on for. Sometimes the criticism is warranted. Others, not so much.
