May 13, 2013?
Michael Fairchild said he had it all planned out. He wanted to wait two to three more weeks, keeping one eye open to other schools, before he committed to Missouri.
He told as much to PowerMizzou.com on Thursday, May 9. Three days later, Fairchild committed to the Tigers, becoming the eight commitment in the 2014 class.
So what changed? Was there a moment of lucidity, an epiphany over the weekend that made the 6-foot-6, 265-pound tackle from Blue Valley West realize there was no need to wait to commit?
"I kind of lied to you," Fairchild said with a playful laugh. "I already knew I was going to commit today."
One thing Fairchild didn't lie about, however, was the manner in which he would commit. He simply called his recruiting coach, Andy Hill, and then broke the news to him, co-offensive line coach Bruce Walker and head coach Gary Pinkel. While all three coaches were excited, Fairchild said Walker's response stood out to him.
"He said, 'I knew you were smart, but now I think you're a genius,'" Fairchild said.
Now, in a banner year for talent in the state of Kansas, Fairchild said he'll turn his attention to recruiting other athletes to Missouri.
Fairchild is Missouri's eighth commitment, and the second offensive lineman to commit to the Tigers.
