November 13, 2007

The first half was looking grim for the 9th-ranked Washington State University men's basketball team. Playing in their first road game of the year, the Cougars were sloppy and slow as they watched the fired up hometown Boise State Broncos jump out to a 13-point lead in the first half. Wazzu cut it down to a manageable six-point deficit at the half and then it was all Cougars in the second half as they opened the second frame with a 33-12 run and glided in from there for an 86-74 victory over the pesky Broncos that improved their record to 2-0 on the year. Four players scored in double figures for the Cougars, who were led by the 26 points of senior guard Derrick Low.

Joining Low in double figures were Kyle Weaver with 19 points, Daven Harmeling with 18 points and Taylor Rochestie with 12 points. It was Weaver and Low who combined for the bulk of the points in the second-half spurt that opened up the game for Wazzu while Harmeling scored most of his points in the first half to help the Cougars stay within striking distance at halftime.

Overall, the Cougars shot 56% from the field but shot a torrid 61.5% in the second half to compensate for the poor first-half shooting. Wazzu also only turned the ball over three times in the second half after an uncharacteristic eight turnovers in the sloppy first half.

It is the second consecutive win for the Cougars over the Broncos and extends their lead to 4-2 in the all-time series.

The Cougars will next play Idaho at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 16 at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman.
