When the upset loss to the California Bears occurred in Pullman last month, it sent the Washington State University Cougar men's hoop team reeling on a three-game losing streak. But it was Wazzu that sent California reeling this time, as the Cougars thrashed the Bears in a 70-49 win at Berkeley that improves their record to 22-6 overall and keeps their stranglehold on third place in the Pac-10 at 10-6. Junior guard Taylor Rochestie led the team with 18 points.

Playing without injured redshirt junior forward Daven Harmeling, who suffered a sprained ankle in practice earlier in the week, the Cougars opened the game with a 9-2 run by scoring on four of their first five possessions. Junior center Aron Baynes was the first-half force for Wazzu, scoring eight of his 10 points in the half. The Cougars gradually built their lead to double digits at 31-20, but the Bears fought back with a 6-0 run to end the half with the Cougars ahead, 31-26.

In the second half, the Cougars put the game away early by scoring on 14 of their first 19 possessions. At one point, Wazzu scored on seven consecutive possessions to turn a 47-36 lead into a 20-point gap at 62-42, just under midway through the half. The Cougars went into a mini-drought over the next four minutes - during which both Baynes and junior Caleb Forrest fouled out of the game - but California was unable to capitalize. Joining Rochestie and Baynes in double digits were senior guards Kyle Weaver with 17 points and Derrick Low with 15 points. Baynes led the team with eight rebounds.

The Cougars will next play against Stanford at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 1 in Palo Alto.
