Cajuns burn ULM's post season hopes

The Battle on the Bayou took on a bit of special meaning this year, as a win by the home standing ULM Warhawks (5-7, 4-4) would put them in contention for their first ever post season bowl game. The UL-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns (3-9, 3-5) were looking to just play spoiler, and it was a role they played well as they won their third straight game over ULM 23-22.

After entering halftime trailing 13-10, the Cajuns used the entire third quarter to erase the deficit and build a 23-13 point lead as they held ULM to just 22 yards of offense on five plays from scrimmage.

UL-Lafayette would hold the ten point advantage until the 9:33 mark in the fourth quarter when junior Radi Jabour hit his third field goal of the game from 28 yards out. The Warhawk defense would hold on the ensuing Cajun possession, limiting them to five possessions.

Kolton Browning looked to lead his team to a tying drive, as he along with the running attack of senior Frank Goodin and redshirt freshmen Jyruss Edwards and Tavarese Maye put together an eight play, 84 yard touchdown with 3:05 remaining. The PAT was blocked by Cooper Gerami for the final score of 23-22.

Senior defensive back Alex Ibe would give the Warhawks one remaining hope, as he intercepted a Chris Masson pass at the goal line with 1:31 remaining in the game, returning it to the one before being knocked out of bounds.

The ensuing possession would not move the ball, resulting in a turnover on downs.

ULM would waste no time breaking onto the scoreboard, as they took the opening kick off 55 yards in seven play drive for a Keavon Milton one yard touchdown reception from Browning. The game marked the return to the tight end position for Milton who had been moved to defensive end through the previous 11 games.

The Warhawks would add a Jabour 34 yard field goal with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter to extend their lead to 10-0.

UL-Lafayette would break onto the scoreboard with a 25 yard Brett Baer field goal. The Warhawks would answer again with a 40 yard field goal just seconds into the second quarter.

Browning ended the game with 170 yards of total offense, putting him just 29 yards short of the school record for total offense.
