2011 Season Prediction
Fall camp starts for the Tigers on Thursday, August 4th. To wrap up our ten days of free camp previews, PowerMizzou.com breaks down Missouri's schedule game-by-game. Here is our pre-camp prediction on the 2011 season:
For the first time in five years, it's not Illinois on the schedule in the season-opener. The Tigers get what should be a little more of a sure thing to start the season. James Franklin picks up two touchdown passes in his first start and Brad Madison starts strong with three sacks.
Prediction: Missouri 38, Miami 7
Yes, it's an early season test. Franklin's first road test comes on Friday night against a PAC-12 team. But the Sun Devils were just 6-6 last year and gave up 25 points per game (about eight more than Missouri). The Tiger defense is the difference in this one with E.J. Gaines and Kenji Jackson both getting an interception. Franklin isn't great, but Kendial Lawrence runs for 95 yards and a score as the Tigers win.
Prediction: Missouri 23, Arizona State 10
Not a lot of point in breaking this one down. Jimmy Costello plays the fourth quarter and Missouri rolls.
Prediction: Missouri 45, Western Illinois 10
The Tigers are feeling good, while Oklahoma comes in with a loss against Florida State on the non-con slate. The Sooners know they have to win out to have any shot at a national title. Both teams struggle to move the ball and the game is tied at ten at halftime. After the break, Roy Finch gets the Sooner ground game going and Landry Jones throws two touchdown passes. The Sooners pull away late.
Prediction: Oklahoma 31, Missouri 17
Record 3-1, 0-1
With a week off and the loss to OU fresh in their minds, Missouri comes out angry in Manhattan. The Tigers ride a big first half from Lawrence and Henry Josey to a 17-point lead at the break. The defense takes it from there as Missouri's offense slows down, but the Tigers are never seriously threatened. Sheldon Richardson gets a sack and forces a fumble in the first start of his Missouri career.
Prediction: Missouri 34, Kansas State 20
Record: 4-1, 1-1
The Cyclones, as they always do, play the Tigers tough. The Missouri defense is off, allowing a couple of big plays in the first half and Mizzou leads just 14-13 at the break. But Franklin gets things going with the first 300-yard day of his career, 205 of them coming in the second half. Missouri survives and advances.
Prediction: Missouri 35, Iowa State 23
Record: 5-1, 2-1
In a series that has favored the road team, Oklahoma State comes out guns blazing. Justin Blackmon catches two first-half touchdowns and adds another in the third quarter as the Pokes take a 31-24 lead into the fourth. Franklin engineers a drive resulting in a De'Vion Moore 2-yard run to tie the game. The defense gets a turnover on a Jacquies Smith fumble recovery. Key catches by Wes Kemp and Michael Egnew set up Grant Ressel for the game-winner from 24 yards away.
Prediction: Missouri 34, Oklahoma State 31
Record: 6-1, 3-1
Missouri has won three straight while the Aggies come in 4-0 in Big 12 play. The Tigers have to win to have any shot at a Big 12 championship. Franklin is solid, but the Missouri running game can't get going against the Aggies. Missouri does a solid job against Jeff Fuller and it's a low-scoring game, with A&M leading 17-14 entering the fourth quarter. A key turnover in Aggie territory turns the tide and A&M stays perfect in league play.
Prediction: Texas A&M 27, Missouri 17
Record: 6-2, 3-2
Robert Griffin gets the Bears offense rolling early, putting up 200 all-purpose yards in the first half. Baylor jumps to a 17-7 halftime lead as the Tigers suffer from a hangover opening their second straight trip to Texas. Two early second-half drives tie it, but the Tigers run out of steam as Griffin runs in from 17 yards for the game-winner midway through the fourth. A final drive falls short for Mizzou.
Prediction: Baylor 24, Missouri 17
Record: 6-3, 3-3
Coming off back-to-back losses, Missouri needs to get things going against a Texas team whose only Big 12 loss has come to Oklahoma. A stingy UT defense stifles Franklin and the Tiger attack, but Mizzou picks off three Longhorn passes, returning one for a score. The Tigers survive a last-minute drive from Texas as Kip Edwards plays the hero with a red zone interception to ice it.
Prediction: Missouri 21, Texas 15
Record: 7-3, 4-3
On senior day, the Tigers feed De'Vion Moore early and often. Moore rewards the coaches with 100 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers take down Tech relatively easily.
Prediction: Missouri 33, Texas Tech 20
Record: 8-3, 5-3
Franklin plays his best game of the season, torching the Jayhawk secondary for 320 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover. T.J. Moe and Jerrell Jackson both top 100 yards and Missouri cruises in the second half for another win at Arrowhead.
Prediction: Missouri 41, Kansas 14
Record: 9-3, 6-3
