Charlotte WR might make choice at Army Bowl

MORE: U.S. Army All-American Bowl

CHARLOTTE -- The U.S. Army Bowl tour made its way to Mallard Creek High School on Tuesday, where Rivals100 wide receiver Marquez North officially earned his selection to the Jan. 5th showcase in San Antonio.

"Marquez embodies the characteristics and values of an 'Army Strong' soldier, and we are proud to have him on our team," said Sgt. First Class Charles Holloway, who presented the jersey to North.

North is the second Mallard Creek standout in as many years to earn the recognition, as Florida freshman offensive tackle D.J. Humphries was selected to play in the 2012 game.

"I would like to thank the U.S. Army for this honor," North said. "I couldn't have done this without my teammates."

"This is awesome. This is the second year in a row we've been fortunate enough to have the U.S. Army here. It's something that brings a good energy around the school and the football program. We're fortunate," said Mallard Creek head coach Mike Palmieri.

North's Mallard Creek teammates were thrilled.

"I'm just real happy for 'Quez. It's a real big accomplishment for him," said Brian Walker, a North Carolina commitment.

The 6-3, 205-pound North, the No. 28 prospect in the 2013 Rivals100 and the nation's No. 2 wide receiver prospect, will not be able to play in the game because of recent surgery to repair a torn labrum. He is expected to be back in action in time for his freshman season next summer at whichever college he chooses.

"The diagnosis is 4-6 months, but I'm healing pretty fast, so I don't know," North said.

North has a huge decision to make in the coming months, as he's planning to choose between Tennessee, North Carolina, Clemson, Ohio State, Florida, and Oregon.

He isn't ruling out the possibility of announcing his choice at the Army Bowl.

"I might try to do it at the All-American Game. I'm going to try and get it done by then," he said.
