2013 PRESEASON CLASS 5A TOP TEN

The Old Coach Team Rankings
2013 Class 5A: Top 10

We are still a couple of months away from the start of the 2013 Texas High School football season, but there is still plenty of interest leading up to the start of the new season.

With the excitement constantly growing as we get closer to the season, TheOldCoach.com once again puts together our own pre-season top ten rankings to give our readers an idea of what teams to watch moving forward and who could be a potential state title contender.

Detailed previews for every 11-man team in the state can be found in The Old Coach FNF Magazine including rankings for the Top 50 teams in each class. The Old Coach FNF Texas magazine will be available at traditional newsstand outlets and high school campuses statewide starting the last week of June. The best way to receive the magazine is to purchase it online at www.theoldcoach.com.

Who are the teams to watch out for in 2013?

Without further introduction, here is a look at The Old Coach Preseason Class 5A Top 10 teams.

1. ALLEN
Head Coach: Tom Westerberg, 2012 Record: 15-1

Allen returned to the top with last season's Division I state championship, its second in school history, returns only three offensive starters and loses a ton of lettermen from a year ago. But key players are back on both sides of the ball, one of those is dynamic quarterback Kyler Murray who finished 2012 with more than 3,800 combined yards and 42 touchdowns. The Allen defense should be even better than a year ago with seven returning starters including linebackers Tay Evans, Christian Sam and defensive back Chad Adams. Head coach Tom Westerberg and his staff should turn this Eagle team into a state title contender once again.

2. KATY
Head Coach: Gary Joseph, 2012 Record: 16-0

After beating Cedar Hill 35-24 for the program's seventh state championship Katy returns plenty of talent on both sides of the ball. Katy doesn't rebuild, they simply reload so this squad has the ability to capture an eighth state title without question. Katy's ground game was dominant a year ago, and there's no reason to expect that it will slow down in 2013 with running back Rodney Anderson returning. As with any Gary Joseph-coached team, Katy will be extremely tough defensively with the front seven a strength with linemen Cody Gessler and Tim Wilkerson returning.

3. EULESS TRINITY
Head Coach: Steve Lineweaver, 2012 Record: 10-3

With three all-district offensive linemen returning from 2012, look for Trinity's ground game to be extremely potent. Defensively, the linebacker trio of Ngalo, Woolley and Mulanga anchor a defense that was ranked first in the Dallas/Fort Worth area last season, allowing just 219 yards of total offense per game.

4. CIBOLO STEELE
Head Coach: Scott Lehnhoff, 2012 Record: 14-1

With eight offensive starters returning, Steele brings running back and three year starter Justin Stockton to lead the Knights potent and physical ground attack. As a junior, Stockton ran for over 2200 yards and 30 touchdowns, he's got one of the best offensive lines in the state in front of him. There's work to do on defense with just five starters back, but the Knights have speed and their kids know the scheme well.

5. DESOTO
Head Coach: Claude Mathis, 2012 Record: 14-1

DeSoto went toe to toe with the behemoths of Class 5A in 2012 and took eventual state champ Allen to the wire in a memorable semifinal clash. Typically, DeSoto's high-octane offense is the team's strong point but in 2013 it could be its defense. The defense has eight returning starters and the defensive line will lead the way. Even though the team's offensive line needs to be retooled Quarterback Desmond White (3,521 yards, 34 TDs passing) offers plenty of stability for the offense.

6. SOUTHLAKE CARROLL
Head Coach: Hal Wasson, 2012 Record: 12-2

It was surprising to see Carroll go down in the state quarterfinals to DeSoto in 2012, but make no mistake about the fact that the Dragons will be back with a vengeance in 2013 with the return of 13 All-district selections from last year's squad.

7. AUSTIN WESTLAKE
Head Coach: Darren Allman, 2012 Record: 10-5

A veteran Chap team is seeking a fifth trip to a state championship game since 2000. Two of the team's 14 returning starters - junior inside LBs Hudson Hall and Breckyn Hager - anchor a defense that gave up just 15.2 points a game last season.

8. HOUSTON LAMAR
Head Coach: Tom Nolan, 2012 Record: 15-1

The Redskins went on a surprise run a year ago advancing all the way to the 5A Division I State Championship game before falling to Allen. The return of QB Darrell Colbert and a defense that is led by DB John Bonney has Redskin fans wanting more.

9. CEDAR HILL
Head Coach: Joey McGuire, 2012 Record: 11-5

The Longhorns, who came within seven minutes of a state title in 2012 losing to Katy, brings back a loaded defense with seven returning starters. Experience will be huge for this group of seniors in 2013.

10. GALENA PARK NORTH SHORE
Head Coach: David Aymond, 2012 Record: 12-2

The Mustangs should be well-equipped to compete in 2013 with a dangerous trio of offensive weapons including explosive running back Tristan Houston. Aymond's squad should have a good shot at duplicating North Shore's 42.5 points per game last year. The defense is led by Alabama commit Zach Whitley at linebacker.
