Huskers add elite prospect in receiver Harrison

Nebraska scored big in the state of Missouri today as they added commits from Grandview, Mo. tight end Freedom Akinmoladun and Lee's Summit (Mo.) West receiver Monte Harrison.

The 6-foot-2, 194-pound Harrison has been focused on baseball for most of the summer but felt like it was the right time to end his recruitment. He cited his relationship with the Huskers' football and baseball programs as the determining factor in making his decision and he'll play both sports in college.

"I committed to Nebraska today," Harrison said. "It wasn't anything special about today. I just felt like it was home and I've been talking with [Nebraska baseball coach] (Darin) Erstad and the [Nebraska football] coaches over a long time period.

"I built a good relationship with them and I just felt like it was just right and my mom said she was OK with it so I went ahead and did it."

With Harrison, the Huskers are adding an elite multi-sport athlete who has been compared to another Kansas City area prospect that Nebraska fans are familiar with.

"He's Kansas City's next Bubba Starling," Lee's Summit West head coach Royce Boehm said, referring to the former Gardner-Edgerton quarterback who signed with Nebraska out of high school before being drafted by Kansas City in the first-round of the 2011 MLB draft.

"He's going places in that one," Boehm said about baseball. "He's damn good at basketball. In football, he's a dual-threat, he can throw the ball and catch the ball."

A Rivals250 wide receiver, Harrison becomes Nebraska's 11th commit for the 2014 class. He won the offensive skill MVP award at the St. Louis Rivals Camp presented by Under Armour this past spring and is ranked as the 33rd best receiver in the country and the No. 236 overall prospect in the nation.
