Mizzou adds to 2014 class
One of the concerns with the Mizzou football team heading in to the 2014 season was the lack of depth at the defensive end position. Starters Markus Golden and Shane Ray spent all of 2013 learning from and backing up 2014 NFL Draft picks Kony Ealy and Michael Sam.
The expected backups in 2014, Charles Harris and Marcus Loud, spent 2013 on the scout team, redshirting. The rest of the depth will come from the class of 2014 members Spencer Williams, Walter Brady, Rocel McWilliams and perhaps Grant Jones.
Now you can add Laney CC (CA) defensive end Eddie Heard in to the mix. The three-star junior college prospect chose Mizzou over Washington and Oregon.
"Mizzou just felt like the right fit for me," Heard said. "Just the closeness of the team and the coaching staff. Also Columbia is a nice place to spend the next 2-3 years."
Coming in as a junior college transfer, Heard does not have time as a luxury, so he will be trying to contribute from day one.
"I'm going to come in and work as hard as I can to contribute any way possible. I'll work my hardest to try to get on the field and contribute," he said.
Heard expects to report to Mizzou at the beginning of June to enroll in summer school and will spend all summer with the team working out to get ready for the 2014 season. All that work this summer will hopefully lead to Heard's goal of contributing quickly.
"I'm a very goal orientated person and the biggest goal is to be on the field," Heard explained. "All I can do is control my effort and I will be there working as hard as I can to try to make it on the field as quickly as possible."
Heard first started to hear from Mizzou at the end of April. After a few weeks of communicating with the Mizzou coaches, Heard picked up a Tiger offer May 7th. He quickly scheduled an official visit for May 16th. Now the whirlwind romance is over and Heard will be a Tiger for the 2014 season.
