Missouri will open fall camp in less than a month. Southeastern Conference Media Days start in Birmingham in less than a week and PowerMizzou.com will be there. As our leadup to the unofficial kickoff of daily coverge for the 2012 season, we will take an in-depth look at every position on the roster headed into camp. We continue on defense with a look at the cornerbacks.
The Starters: E.J. Gaines was an all-Big 12 player and posted one of the best seasons in school history for a defensive back in his first year as a starter. Kip Edwards enters his second full season as a starter on the other side. The top two here are very secure headed into camp.
The Backups: Randy Ponder has gone from walk-on to reliable contributor and will be Mizzou's third corner. Xavier Smith is likely to enter camp as the backup at the other spot, but will have a fight on his hands to keep the spot.
Camp Outlook: It would be a big surprise to see any of the top three lose his spot. But with the departure of Robert Steeples the second backup spot is up for grabs. Smith will have to fight off challenges from Earnest Payton and David Johnson to maintain the spot.
Projected Depth Chart: E.J. Gaines/Kip Edwards, Randy Ponder/David Johnson
