Mizzou signs four-star

The Missouri basketball program announced today it has received a signed National Letter of Intent from Jakeenan Gant. A 6-foot-8, 200 pound forward from Springfield (Ga.) Effingham County, Gant is the number 47 ranked player in the 2014 Rivals150.

Gant chose Missouri over offers from Florida, Indiana, Georgia, Syracuse, Tennessee and several other schools.

PowerMizzou.com had the opportunity to watch Gant on a couple of occasions while he played AAU with Southern Stampede. He is an athletic forward who could play either small forward or power forward. Gant has better than average ball handling for his size and can shoot from 15 feet in consistently. He looks more comfortable facing the basket than with his back to it, but his athleticism allows him to score in the paint without polished moves.

Here is what Frank Haith had to say about Gant's signing in a statement released by the Missouri Athletic Department.

"Jakeenan really fits our program in all aspects of his game and his approach," he said. "He's an outstanding young man from a great family and just has that competitive drive in everything he does. He was the top player in Georgia as a junior and will keep getting better and better as he matures and adds strength. He has the ability to step out and shoot the basketball on the perimeter, defend on all levels of the court and, as he adds that strength, his offensive post game will take that next step. Jakeenan can be a difference-making scorer and defender both on the wing and in the paint."

"We are really excited to be adding a player of Jakeenan's caliber to our program and we have started making a recruiting name in the Southeastern Conference footprint in a short period of time," continued Haith. "The fan support we have, the facilities and the academic track record at Missouri makes this a great place to continue your education. I am very excited about the future of our program, especially now that we have balanced out our recruiting classes."

Going in to the 2014 class Missouri only had two scholarships available, so there is a possibility that the class is complete. It seems like a slim possibility, though. Each of the last few seasons there has been at least one player leave the program before their eligibility expired. That means Missouri will continue to recruit for this class in to the late signing period.

Currently, the 2014 Mizzou class sits at number 24 overall and number three in the Southeastern Conference. Kentucky has the top class in the SEC and number one overall. Florida has the second class in the SEC and number four overall.
