It’s been an action-packed past several weeks for 2023 four-star quarterback J.J. Kohl, who has taken in spring practices on college campuses, competed in 7-on-7 tournaments and participated in camps and showcases in different states.

No weekend was as crazy as the most recent, though. Kohl performed well at an Elite 11 regional camp in Ohio on Saturday only to hop on a plane and arrive in Kansas City, Missouri, in time for the UnderArmour All-American camp.

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound signal caller graded out well in Ohio and took it one step further in Missouri, earning an invitation to the UnderArmour All-American game in Orlando, Florida, early next year.

“It’s been a crazy experience for me,” said Kohl, who is a priority recruit for the Iowa State coaching staff and has taken several visits to Ames throughout the process. “I’ve been looking forward to this weekend for a while now. I’m very thankful for the opportunity and very fortunate and thankful for my parents providing me these opportunities. I’m grateful.”

Kohl was one of the highest-graded in multiple categories at Massillon High School in Ohio, especially in the different Elite 11 testing categories.

“(Saturday) I was very consistent and zinging the ball a little bit,” he said. “I had a lot of velocity behind all my throws. I had a pretty good day. I got a few pointers from the coaches to think about. That’s the nice thing about going to these camps. Every coach points out some things that are a little different. My job is to think what makes sense, what I need to adjust and what would allow me to perform at a high level.”

Although Sunday’s camp wasn’t entirely focused on the quarterback position, Kohl said he picked up some new pointers from a former NFL quarterback on hand.

“Coach (Jeff) Blake today was talking about how I pat the ball a little bit,” the Ankeny junior said. “He talked about time and how on a throw you want it to be quick and as efficient as possible. He brought up how I could get rid of the tap of the ball and create a faster release.”

Moving his game back outside presented another set of challenges, said Kohl.

“I did have to adjust a little bit to the wind,” he said. “It was a little different coming from yesterday throwing in a controlled environment with no wind, then out here going today in what feels like 35 or 40 mile-an-hour winds. It took some time to get used to, but after a while I settled in. I’m going to process and go over every throw I can. My mom was videoing every throw, so I’ll go through those.”

Kohl was one of several Iowa prospects that made the trek to Winnetonka High School in Kansas City, joining safety teammate Jamison Patton and others.

“It was pretty cool,” he said. “It wasn’t just Jamison and Jalyn Thompson (of Dowling Catholic). There were a couple of other Iowa guys down here. (Dowling Catholic’s) Jaxon Smolik and (Winterset’s) Beau Knobloch were here. It’s kind of cool to see Iowa guys come down here. We’re all competing together.”

Before heading for home, Kohl gave the latest on his recruitment that will wind down later this month.

“Things still are the same,” he said. “I’m going up to Wisconsin this upcoming week and am trying to see if I can make another practice or two at Iowa State. It’s still the same thing that I said (a week ago), I’m going to try to commit within the next couple weeks.”
