Every week, PowerMizzou.com publisher Gabe DeArmond answers questions from Tiger fans in the mailbag. This format allows for a more expansive answer than a message board post. Keep your eye out each week to submit your question for the mailbag or send them to powermizzou@gmail.com. On to this week's inquiries.
epollack asks: Are Iowa State tickets not going to be going on sale...?How about Braggin' Rights? Any date there? Thank you!
GD: I'm not much good for ticket questions since I don't buy them. I'd try the ticket office or MUTigers.com.
rmotigers asks:Â Does social media make being a journalist easier or is it harder because there is more information out there?
GD: Both. It's easier to access information. But the fact is, it makes it much harder to run a decent outlet. If people can follow these kids and programs and get information directly from them, why do they need us? It's a constant challenge to find ways to present new features and information and remain relevant.
The biggest issue with social media is that most of us are idiots when we use it. If you're in a rush to be the first to tweet something, why should anybody pay you for that information? I've mostly quit tweeting quotes because once you do that, every media outlet that isn't actually there covering what you're covering will just take the tweet and write a story about it. And you've given away your best information.
I've really tried this year to make my focus be on PowerMizzou and to use Twitter mostly as a place to link back to our site. Twitter doesn't pay me. PowerMizzou does. Why do I care how many people follow me or like my tweets? My salary is the same regardless.
The one exception is when there is major breaking news. I will post that on PM first, but I'll tweet it immediately afterwards. The reason is simple. If I'm not the first to tweet it, I'm not going to get credit for breaking the story. The shelf life on breaking news anymore is about 10 seconds, so you might as well put it out there for free immediately.
The simple fact is, the people who just want bare bones information will get it for free and won't subscribe here. We have to cater to the people who want more in-depth coverage, reporting and opinions.
mexicojoe asks:Â What are the two or three best decisions Mack Rhoades made as AD.
GD: 1. Going to Baylor
2&3. I don't know.
I'm not really even trying to be funny. I think Mack might have been able to do well here, but once November 2015 hit, he threw everything else out the window and it was a trainwreck from there on out. He handled it poorly and let it pretty much nullify anything else he was going to do. He might end up being a pretty good AD. But he wasn't here.
GraphicEdgeGuy asks: You have said many time that when it comes to critical and negative comments about your own team on Rivals message boards...Power Mizzou is no different than other SEC teams in this regard which I am sure is true. My QUESTIONS ask you to subjectively rank/compare (as best as you can) our fan base to other SEC teams in the following areas.Â
GD: There were about 2005 questions wrapped into this one and if you want to see them all click here. But basically, it comes down to, how does Mizzou's fanbase compare to others in the SEC?
Bottom half for sure. I think as far as number of donors and total donations they're down around 13th. Obviously that has to increase. Jim Sterk told me last week that the average number of donors in the SEC is around 12,000 and Mizzou has 7,900. The average SEC school sells 67,000 season football tickets. Missouri's stadium isn't even going to hold 67,000 soon.
At a lot of these places, college football Saturday is a family tradition and a religion. You go because you always go. That doesn't mean the attendance doesn't dip in bad times, but I don't think it dips like it does here. Missouri fans seem to usually need to be shown a reason Mizzou is worth their support. Most other schools need to see reasons (over a longer period of time) that their school isn't worth the support.
It's an uphill battle. As everyone at Mizzou said when they joined the SEC, everyone had to step up their game. That meant administrators, coaches, players and, yes, fans. It's a process.
JAGSports asks: Â Break from MU. Who should the Royals keep between Moose and Hoz?
GD: Moose. Hosmer's going to get a ridiculous amount of money that I'd be mad if the Royals pay. Moustakas isn't in great shape now. His main skill (power), translates. Hosmer's main skill is athleticism and I think it will erode over time a little bit. I'd like to see them try to keep Moose and see if they can get Cain for three years, but I doubt Cain takes that deal.
mexicojoe asks:Â Any updates or news regarding the statue for Norm?
GD: It is on track to be unveiled the day of the Iowa State game.
ChuckRE asks: Â I know you are immersed in covering Mizzou but you have lived in CoMo for a long time. How big a deal to the local economy is Mizzou football? Is the football crowd on 7 weekends such a small part that it is really no big deal when football craters?
GD: I don't know specifics to businesses around town, but I'm sure it makes a significant difference. You're talking about, over the course of seven weekends, about 100 thousand empty seats. That's a lot of people who could be spending money in CoMo. And I can tell you from running a business that relies somewhat on Mizzou's success, business is better when the football and basketball teams are good.
mufootball1 asks:Â Which board is more active, Tigers Lair or Off Topic?
GD: Tigers' Lair. And it's not particularly close.
aholtmeyerMUTCB asks: 1. In your preseason prediction you had them going 7-5. If you had to revise your predictions for the rest of the year, what record would you have them finishing with? 2. Which SEC game do you think is most winnable?
GD: 1. After the Missouri State game, I revised that to 5-7. That game opened my eyes and should have opened those of most people. At this point, I'd say 4-8 because I had Purdue as a win. I still have to think they beat Idaho and UCONN. I think they'll find one more. I just don't know which one it is.
2. I'd toss Tennessee at home and Arkansas on the road in the same boat. Then at Vandy, at Kentucky and home against Florida in another group. Then at UGA is the least winnable. Like I said, I think they'll win one of them. But I can't tell you which one I think it will be.
MizzouBSCE93 asks: Who is the true 2nd team quarterback so we know who our favorite player is? Any rumblings of a true youth movement coming on the football team?
GD: On the first one, I don't even think they know. Both have played. But they don't appear all that intent on putting either one of them in a game unless they have no other choice. I'm still not sure what Drew Lock was doing on the field late in the Auburn game.
I haven't heard any talk of a true youth movement other than my post saying that's what they should do. I think it's Barry Odom's best chance to be the coach here next year.
S_W_M_O asks: Â You are Barry Odom and you have been guaranteed a full year 3. Do you scrap the hurry up offense, or do you close your eyes and pray it works next year?
GD: I'd scrap it regardless. But I'd have scrapped it after about three games last year. Missouri doesn't have a great offense. Why run as many plays as you can when you don't have a great offense? You can still keep the concepts and the plays, but slow down. Instead of 15 possessions a game, take ten and do something with them. And at least if you go three and out your defense can rest for two or three minutes instead of 36 seconds.
Zoufan27 asks: Who decommits first? How many recruits leaving will trigger bo’s firing?
GD: Second answer first: If he gets fired it's not going to be because of the recruiting class. If he stays, it's not going to be much because of the recruiting class. That's not how you make the determination. We don't know how good any of those guys are. I mean, Gary Pinkel's job wouldn't have been determined by the commitment of Sean Weatherspoon...but four years later that looked a lot different. Keeping or firing a coach based on the commitment list is foolish.
As to your first question, we act like these kids committed to a school that was in the playoff last year. I don't think Missouri was selling a great record on the field to this class from the start. They're selling a chance to come in and help Missouri get there. These kids have to look at the current situation and see early playing time. That's a plus for a lot of kids. I'm not saying there won't be any decommitments. There are at every school every year almost. But those assuming a mass exodus if Missouri doesn't make a bowl game are panicking prematurely.
UCM Tiger asks: Â Looking at our commits right now & a few of the others you think we are hard after. List the names you think would be a 50%'chance or better of seeing the field next year if they come to Mizzou?
GD: It's far too early to say. But I'd start with wide receivers and defensive backs. Have to think they'd all feel good about their chances to see the field based on what I've seen this season.
amhorrell asks: Â next non UCONN/Idaho win comes in football or basketball?
GD: Football. Like I said, I think they'll win one.
I_Hate_the_Cornhuskers asks: Â Was Odom the sole author of Saturday's "tirade" or was there help from the AD office? The repeating of key words in interviews appears that he might have been helped.
GD: I can't say for sure, but the impression I got was that it came as a surprise to the AD staff that was there. Certainly possible he got some advice, but I talked to one person who said nobody knew and everybody over there certainly seemed to be caught off guard.
mufootball1 asks: It seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Beckner would leave early for the NFL after this season.Given his lack of production, IYO is Beckner back for his senior season in 2018?
GD: As of now, I'm not sure he could leave. Based on this season so far coming off two knee injuries, I can't see an NFL team taking a chance early. But Missouri fans should hope he leaves. Because if he does, that means he got things going and likely played very well for the final eight weeks.
Christianmizzouguy asks: Â How much does a healthy/non issue Christian Holmes, AJ Logan, and Nate Howard help this defense? It always seems Mizzou Offense wont play to it's Strengths and run the ball in losses. Is this just perception when we lose or an actual issue?
GD: Holmes probably would have helped a little, but I don't think the record is any different. Same with Logan. Howard? I don't know. I've not expected him to be a part of this team since the start of fall camp and neither did anyone else involved with the team.
On the second question, it's unanswerable. Missouri's biggest problem has been that they've started so badly on both sides of the ball in the last two games that the game was over before they got a first down. And the first series in both cases ended on a third down that Missouri tried to run and didn't convert. So I think it's unfair to say the biggest problem has been not running the ball. The biggest problem has been not running OR throwing it well and the defense not being able to hold the fort until the offense figured things out.
sharpwp asks: Â When you spoke up after the Odom Outburst, did you think he was referring to you guys in the media? Do you feel some of his frustrations were directed at you guys in the media? Was it directed at the Fan Base? Was it just Barry ranting?
GD: I'm not sure and that's why I asked the question. I think it was probably in part directed at the media. I don't know if there was anything specific he read. I haven't seen anyone call for his job, but plenty of us have alluded to the fact that it's going to be in question if they don't start playing better. Maybe he heard some things on the radio. Maybe he read Twitter. To some extent, I think it was directed at fans too. And to some extent I think it was a plea to his boss for patience. I asked the question for two reasons: One, I didn't want to be soft and just let him walk off without asking anything. Two, I genuinely didn't know the answer.
SidewinderAZ asks: Â Who is the third string LT at Rock Bridge?
GD: Unfortunately, I have been unable to find out.
cotton14 asks: Â You've mentioned you expect a higher than normal number of transfers after this year. I know you don't like to push kids out and I don't want names, but what would you set the over/under at?
GD: 9.5. That seems about right to me.
TheRoyalPain asks: Â Your take on this running back by series they trot out every Saturday? please no "got to watch the touches so they don't wear down take".
GD: I like when someone asks me a question but then tells me how I can't answer. Fortunately, this time, I agree with you. I still have no idea how you can be down 14-0 in a game before your best player touches the field like Missouri was against Purdue. The first series on offense in each of the last two games ended on an Ish Witter carry up the middle on third down. I like Ish. He's a good kid. He does some good things and is more valuable than fans give him credit for. But he's not the guy I give the ball to on third down when I absolutely have to have a first down. I'd also like to see more of Larry Rountree after what he's shown the last few times he's been able to carry the ball.
jmizzou asks:Â Chances the punter is voted team MVP at the end of the year?
GD: God I hope not. Nothing against Corey Fatony, but I've watched a team where the punter was the best player. The Chiefs had Dustin Colquitt and nothing else. And finished 2-14.
ski-tiger asks: Â Removing Lock from the options, rank your preferred QB for this years team from: Corby, Smith, Daniel, Gabbert, Franklin, Mauk (aside: I am not even going to try and remember the QBs between Corby and Smith)
GD: Running this system? Chase Daniel. He was the best passer. If you tell me you're going to go to a read option scheme where you run 75% of the time, give me Brad Smith. But Daniel's the choice. He's the best that's ever played the position here.
JenkinsD_2015 asks: Â How big of a game is Kentucky in your mind? I know we won't be expected to win but if we did I see a clear path to finishing October 3-1 putting us at 4-4 on the season and within shouting distance of bowl eligibility going into November. If the season is going to turn around this seems like the last/best chance for it to happen, thoughts?
GD: It's huge. At least to see a team that appears to have refocused and cares and can put together a game. We've seen four games out of Missouri and they've been awful for three-and-a-half of them. That's a third of the season and we've seen nothing to indicate Missouri can be even a mediocre team. At some point, it's not early anymore and you are the team we've seen every week. I can't imagine they win at Georgia so if you want to even entertain a bowl game, you better win at Kentucky. And I know most have long since given up on that idea. But to me, if you want to even be able to show some improvement and feel decent going into the offseason, we just have to see this team go play well and put together a decent game, even if they don't win it.
mugamer asks: Quick Hitting FOOTBALL
GD: What's first, stadium renovation or new HC? At this point I'd say new coach.
Explain our offensive regression in 5 words or less. No single player has improved.
Who ends up the "leader" this season on both sides of the ball? Lock and Beckner I'd guess. Better happen fast.
What is the next stadium construction project after south end zone? Indoor facility.
What SEC head coaches are worth what they're getting paid? They all are. You're worth what the market says you're worth.
mugamer asks: Â Quick hitting BASKETBALL
GD: Is it usual to have so many reclassifications of high level underclassmen, or are we just looking for it because we signed Jontay? It's getting more and more common.
In Blues Brothers fashion, if you were on a mission from God to convince MPJ to stay an extra year, what would you say? Don't. If he was my kid, I'd tell him to go get paid.
How should a member of the press handle uncovering or witnessing corruption at a school that they cover? That's tough. I'd say you'd better be sure and you'd better be able to prove it. Because if you go around asking those questions and you're wrong, you're pretty much screwed.
tigersf19 asks: Favorite Band/SingerFavorite BeverageFavorite FoodBlond or Brunette Favorite Sports teams in college and Pro besides ones from Missouri
GD: Band--Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers (to be honest, I don't listen to music much at all unless I'm in the car with my kids)
Beverage--Tank7, which I haven't had in three months because gout sucks
Food--Fresh seafood
Blond or Brunette--When you're 5-8 and balding, you can't be picky
Sports team--College is whoever plays Kansas in basketball. My second favorite pro team since I was in college has been the Mets. But I really don't like any pro teams except the Chiefs and the Royals.
tunnel asks: Â Is it tougher (or take more concentration) to catch a football and run or catch a basketball and dunk?Pick one freshman in basketball and football (going forward) that is going to surprise you the most?
GD: Assuming you're tall enough to dunk, I'd say catch a football. For me, it's much tougher to dunk.
In hoops, I'll go with Jeremiah Tilmon. In football, Kobie Whiteside.
Coke4Quin asks: Â As moderator, do you have to read every post in every thread both on the Lair and OT to make sure things are staying civil(ish)? Or do you get tips when posters step over the line?
GD: I'd just as soon you guys assume I see everything. Big Brother is watching. Always.
TheZouKeeper asks:  Is Odom the HC if Sterk was the AD a year and a half ago?
GD: Assuming everything else that happened around that time still happened, yes. If you're making the argument that the protest unfolds differently if Sterk is in charge (and some believe that would have been the case), then no.
