Noodlerock asks: Patrick Mahomes tweeted out he would love to see the NHL Arizona Coyotes move to KC if they do not get a new arena deal in the next year or two. In your opinion would KC support the NHL??
GD: Probably at the start. After that, they'd need to win. Like pretty much anything. I was talking with a friend the other day and said at this point, if KC got an NHL or NBA team, I probably wouldn't pay attention. There's a time I would have, but I'm too old now. I've gone 47 years without much caring about either of those leagues and I'm probably not going to start just because a team moves to KC. But there are people that would. I've never viewed KC as a hockey town. I think the NBA would probably do better. But I don't think either one is all that likely.
firsttiger asks: You have often written, and I believe you are correct, that MU doesn't doesn't provide the resources for baseball to be competitive in the SEC, and that fan interest lags significantly behind that of the every other conference team.Realistic or not, please provide your recipe for getting Mizzou into a competitive position. Obviously climate and weather cannot be be changed, but beyond that, what could and should our university and athletic department do to consistently put an SEC caliber team on the field?
GD: It's mostly money. Get a real baseball stadium. Right now, Missouri has a baseball field. Taylor Stadium honestly isn't that much nicer than a lot of the places my son played in high school. Also, put that stadium in a location that isn't the windiest place in all of Columbia. Maybe you can put it in the area around the softball stadium at Mizzou Arena. Maybe put it down in the Reactor Field lot. Don't operate on a shoestring budget where you can't afford to turf the entire field.
Also, I'd start basically giving away tickets. Do a dollar night. Give every student (elementary, high school, college) in Columbia free admission. Maybe a dollar beer night. Anything you can do to get people in the stadium.
Maybe none of that makes a difference. Maybe Missouri just isn't equipped to be consistently successful at baseball. But it's worth a shot.
