If you go to the baseball section on NCAA.com and click on the “Rankings” tab, you’ll find five different ranking systems. D1 Baseball, the NCBWA, Baseball America, the USA Today Coaches Poll and RPI all have their own list of ranked teams, and due to the differences in how each team is evaluated, any given ranked school is likely in a different slot under each list.
Take Oregon State for instance. Oregon State is ranked ninth by D1 Baseball, seventh by NCBWA, 11th by Baseball America and, well, you get the picture. It’s rare to find a consensus on one team, and this makes it all the more impressive that each system agrees on one thing: Florida is the best baseball team in the nation.
Missouri’s (24-9, 6-6 in SEC) opponent this weekend is unanimously ranked first, and it makes sense when looking at their resume. The Gators are 29-6 and 9-3 in the SEC, and they’re all alone in first place in the conference ahead of Arkansas and Georgia (8-4).
Florida is the defending College World Series champions, and is hasn't seen a downtick in production this year. Actually, Florida is off to an even better start this year after it went 23-12 to start 2017.
Take a look at the 2017 team category leaders who have returned this year and you can understand why:
- Runs (43), RBI (56) and Home Runs (12) – JJ Schwarz
- Batting Average (.299) – Nelson Maldonado
- ERA (1.67) and Saves (19) – Michael Byrne
- Innings pitched (126) – Brady Singer
- Wins (12) – Jackson Kowar
Some of those marks even pale in comparison to ones held this year. Schwarz led the team with 12 home runs last year, but Jonathan India and Wil Dalton have both already reached 12, and we’re just over halfway through the season. India and Dalton are also tied with 39 runs each, only three away from last year’s leader. India boasts a .426 batting average, which is first in the SEC by 33 points. He’s also gotten on base 55 percent of the time and is slugging .870, and those marks lead the conference too. Byrne has trimmed his ERA down by more than a full run to 0.62.
Florida’s statistics page is full of eye-popping numbers, and it’s all translated into the country’s best record. The Gators have only lost one series, a two-game set against Central Florida in which they somehow lost both. They play even better at home (20-2) than on the road (8-4).
Unfortunately for Missouri, the weekend series is in Gainesville, where the Tigers simply hasn’t had much success. The Tigers are 4-17 all time against the Gators and haven’t won an away game (0-6) since joining the SEC.
Missouri has had challenges all year, and it has fared well. It’s defeated ranked teams like Miami, Wichita State and Missouri State, took one of three from LSU and even won a series in Auburn.
But Florida is living on a different planet. Though it’s not impossible and hope always has its place in this world, expecting the Tigers to win this series is outlandish. But leaving Florida with one win against the best team in the nation would particularly stand out on Missouri’s resume.
