The Tigers 2013 basketball class had been holding steady at one since Travis Jorgenson committed back in September, but that changed last night when Zach Coleman notified the Mizzou coaches of his decision. They reacted as expected.
"Coach Fuller was really excited," Coleman said. "This was something that he had been pushing for, that he wanted to happen. I had given him my word that this is where I was going to be and I just waited for the right time. There was just something about yesterday that felt like the right time and I just went ahead and made it happen."
After talking with Tim Fuller Coleman got the chance to talk with Frank Haith.
"Coach Haith was real excited," said Coleman. "I spoke with him and he just welcomed me to the Tiger family."
Coleman might be a new name to Tiger fans, but the Mizzou coaches had been recruiting him for a while. Coleman visited Columbia during the season and came away very impressed.
"I got a chance to come up to the campus for the game against Texas A&M and I loved Mizzou Arena. It has a NBA feel to it," Coleman said.
The glitter of a beautiful campus and a state of the art arena are great recruiting tools, but those things are rarely the reason for commitments.
"I just really liked the family feel that Mizzou had and I have a great relationship with Coach Fuller," said Coleman. "I also feel like their style of basketball really fits my play. It was just something that I wanted to do now. Even with all the schools that were coming at me Mizzou felt like a no brainer. A lot of stress has been relieved from me."
Tiger fans are plenty familiar with Mizzou's style of play. But what is it that makes Coleman a good fit?
"I'm very versatile so I can play inside or I can score with my back to the basket. I love to rebound and I can defend and block shots," Coleman said. "I also love to get out in the open court and shoot or get my teammates involved. Sometimes I'm described as too unselfish, but thats always the way I have played. I just want to win basically."
It is a very busy time for Coleman as he plays AAU with the Dallas Mustangs and gets himself ready to attend the NBA Top 100 Camp and the CP3 Camp later this summer. Once his schedule slows down he hopes to make another visit to Mizzou.
