Final fall camp practice

Missouri held its final open practice before Thursday's third scrimmage on the Kadlec Athletic practice fields this afternoon. The scrimmage will mark our last chance to see the Tigers in action prior to the September 4th opener against Illinois. PowerMizzou.com has the rundown on today's workout.

*The biggest news surrounded longsnapper and reserve tight end Beau Brinkley. Brinkley was wearing a sling after suffering a shoulder sprain in practice yesterday. Gary Pinkel was unsure of the timetable for his return.

"We'll see what happens, hopefully we can get him back," Pinkel said. "Those things happen. You don't want them to happen to your snapper though."

If Brinkley can't go in the opener against Illinois, sophomore defensive end Brad Madison will handle the job.

"I got a text last night that said get ready," Madison said. "I've been preparing for snapping for two years straight, but I haven't snapped in a game since high school so I've just got to get mentally ready."

*Other than Brinkley, there were no new injuries at practice.

*The practice was a shorter workout in shorts and shoulder pads with the final scrimmage upcoming. But there were a few plays that stood out.

Ashton Glaser was backed up against his own end zone and under pressure. He scrambled, bought some time and found Eric Waters over the middle for a nice gain. Waters made a couple of nice plays. He continues to be, for me, the most up in the air of the freshmen. He was on campus for spring ball and looked ready to play. At this point, I'm unsure, though the injury to Brinkley could play a factor there. Asked if Brinkley's days as a tight end were over after the injury, Pinkel said, "We're more concerned about getting him back as a snapper."

Henry Josey made a few more nice plays. He continues to stand out among the freshman backs. With De'Vion Moore still out, Josey seems a safe bet to play. Don't rule out that both Josey and Marcus Murphy see the field.

L'Damian Washington had a nice sideline grab under tight coverage by Kip Edwards. My guess for the starting receiving corps would be Washington, T.J. Moe and Wes Kemp.

*Tavon Bolden was getting a few reps as the first team safety in place of Kenji Jackson. Probably doesn't mean a whole lot, but Bolden has his name back in the race for serious playing time.

*The scrimmage tomorrow will be focused on solidifying depth and may be most critical for a few of the freshmen on the edge of playing time. Exact reps have not been determined by the staff.

"We haven't decided that. We'll decide that tomorrow morning," Pinkel said. "There's been times we haven't played some of the starters at all. We might play them six or eight plays, ten plays, 15 plays."

*Play of the Day: With the offense in the shadow of the goalposts, Andrew Gachkar jumped a short route and intercepted Blaine Gabbert, returning it a very short distance for what would have been a pick six.
