Getting physical

After a closed practice on Sunday, Missouri opened things back up with a two-and-a-half hour workout on Monday morning. This practice also marked the first in full pads. PowerMizzou.com has the day's report.

*On the injury front, linebacker Will Ebner joined Donovan Bonner on the shelf temporarily. Ebner has a hamstring injury and is listed as day-to-day.

*Michael Sam and Corey Sudhoff were gone today. They were attending the funeral of former Tiger Daniel Shatz in St. Louis.

*Spent a lot of time watching special teams and we'll have a story on the return games tomorrow. On kickoffs, it looked like Jasper Simmons, Munir Prince, Henry Josey and Marcus Murphy were the deep men. T.J. Moe and Kendial Lawrence were lining up as the secondary safety men. On punt returns, Moe, Murphy and Kip Edwards were rotating, though I expect Carl Gettis still figures in there as well.

*Elsewhere on special teams, a number of freshmen (Darvin Ruise, Kony Ealy, Xavier Smith, E.J. Gaines, Hunt and Jared Parham were working with the second-team coverage unit. Those might be guys to keep an eye on as far as shedding redshirts to contribute outside of their natural positions. Just a guess at this point though.

*During stretch lines I saw that Jerrell Jackson, Moe, Kerwin Stricker and Jimmie Hunt are all currently at one position. I'd expect someone to possibly move to one of the other two receiver spots there. Those four have been among the top six or seven receivers in camp so far in my opinion. You could see Jackson move outside and Moe be the starter in the slot.

*We'll have video of the safeties coming later today. It's easy to tell that Jasper Simmons has really taken over the role of vocal leader at the position.

*In 7-on-7, Trey Hobson made a nice read on the ball to break in front of the receiver for an interception. Hobson grabbed another one later in 11-on-11.

*In line drills, Terrell Resonno put Justin Britt flat on his back. I've liked what I've seen from Resonno, who has really drawn praise from the Tiger coaches so far.

*I saw Grant Ressel bang an extra point off the upright. I mention it only because it's so unusual to see him miss one.

*Notes from the 11-on-11 team period, the first in full pads:

Kendial Lawrence had a few nice runs, including a big gain on the first play where he juked Matt White and tacked on a few yards to the end of the run.

James Franklin continues to impress me. He put a couple balls into tight spots to Andrew Jones and L'Damian Washington.

Brad Madison picked up a sack. It is apparent to me he's the third defensive end and don't rule out the possibility that he pushes Jacquies Smith seriously by the end of camp.

Tristen Holt--who is really thick for a cornerback (not in a bad way)--made his presence felt lighting up Stricker on a swing pass in the flat.

Rolandis Woodland looked to have a step on Gettis on a deep route down the sideline, but Blaine Gabbert's pass was underthrown and Gettis picked it off. Woodland and Gabbert would get their revenge later...sort of.

Derrick Washington just trucked Simmons on a run up the middle. Washington has taken over as THE leader of this offense in my opinion. I'm interested to see what kind of year he'll have.

At this poit in time, players will shuffle between first, second and third team with regularity so don't read too much into it. But I did notice Washington, Jaleel Clark and Eric Waters all getting some first team reps today.

Luke Lambert had one of the biggest hits of the day, taking down Jackson on the jet sweep.

T.J. Moe took a slip screen over the middle, made one man miss and went about 70 yards for a would-be touchdown. That was going to be the play of the day until...

Play of the Day: On the final play of practice, the offense and defense were tied. Winner of the play would get the black jerseys on Tuesday morning. Gabbert found Woodland at about the three-yard line and Woodland dove into the end zone for what looked to be the winning score. Aldon Smith told Jackson and Washington on the sidelines that the offense only won because it cheated. Gary Pinkel then said, "Coach Henson told me on that last play our left guard false started. Defense wins." Smith gets to keep his black jersey for another day.
