With Missouri's 2016 preseason camp approaching, PowerMizzou.com is setting the stage with a position-by-position look at what fans should expect going into Barry Odom's first year as head coach.
Today, we begin with the obvious starting point: Missouri's quarterbacks.
There's no depth chart, but...
Missouri's last depth chart was released before the season finale against Arkansas; in his eight months on the job, Barry Odom has yet to release a depth chart, and that should continue until the week before the West Virginia game.
However, Odom did say that Drew Lock and Marvin Zanders have separated themselves from the other two quarterbacks, so our preseason (speculative) depth chart has the two sophomores tied at No. 1.
Quote to note
"Both of them have a great skill set, and I look forward -- if you saw Drew walk in the door today, he's got some confidence about himself, which is great. Marvin does as well. And you need that at that spot. And also I know it's important for the other ten guys around them to play really well. Because if you do that, then that makes the quarterback's job a lot easier." -- Barry Odom, SEC Media Days
Bottom line
This is Drew Lock's job to lose, basically. Lock is the only quarterback on the roster with in-game experience, and while he struggled last year, he showed (apparently) showed plenty of improvement in the spring. However, Josh Heupel has used two quarterbacks before. That happened in 2013, with Blake Bell and Trevor Knight both getting reps for the Oklahoma Sooners. If Zanders has improved as much as we've heard, Heupel could rotate in the quarterbacks in different situations this year.
But, before preseason camp at least, expect Drew Lock to get that first snap against West Virginia on Sep. 3.
