Spring Preview: Special Teams

The Missouri Tigers are set to start spring ball in less than one week. Over the next few days, PowerMizzou.com will take an in-depth look at the roster as we start our spring ball previews. Today, we finish up our position previews with a look at the special teams.
The Favorites: Jake Harry will punt. That's where what we know comes to an end. Replacing Jeff Wolfert, Tommy Saunders and Jeremy Maclin as the kicker, the holder and the return man will mean a near-complete overhaul of the special teams. Tanner Mills has to be viewed as the favorite to kick, but should receive plenty of competition from Grant Ressel and any walk-ons that are added. The holder could be Jimmy Costello or a reserve wide receiver, possibly Brandon Gerau. As far as the return man, there will be plenty of players who get a look. DeVion Moore, Gilbert Moye, Jared Perry, Robert Steeples and Gahn McGaffie seem likely candidates, but the list could be longer than that.

The Challengers: In a spot where we can't even begin to guess at the starters, it seems fruitless to try to take a shot at reserves.
Spring Prediction: The kicking race will rage on right through fall camp with no real answers after spring ball. Same probably goes for the return game. There simply aren't going to be concrete answers in the next month unless someone just blows away the competition.
Things Could Change If... Gary Pinkel has another diver in his back pocket.
PowerMizzou.com will continue to preview spring football from every angle until the first practice on Tuesday afternoon.
