The Missouri Tigers are set to start spring ball in one week. Over the next few days, will take an in-depth look at the roster as we start our spring ball previews. Today, it's the tight end spot as Missouri tries to replace Chase Coffman.
The Favorite: Andrew Jones is the no-doubt successor to Coffman. As a true freshman, Jones caught 20 passes for 146 yards and looked good, in particular, in the regular season finale against Kansas. Is he Coffman? No, but not many are. Still, the Tigers should have another very good player at a position that has been their strength for the last five seasons.
The Challengers: Jon Gissinger is a senior, but the more likely second-stringer here is sophomore Michael Egnew. Egnew was technically a wide receiver last year, but should add some weight in the off-season and play tight end this season. He's got great athleticism and could challenge Jones by early in the season for the starting spot. Alex Sanders is on campus, but recovering from knee surgery and anything other than a redshirt season would be a surprise.
Spring Prediction: Jones should have little trouble holding on to the starting spot. The interesting thing to watch will be just how quickly Egnew moves up to second-string. Gissinger just isn't in the same mold athletically as the tight ends the Tigers have had of late; Egnew is. Mizzou should enter the fall with two sophomores atop the depth chart.
Things Could Change If... Honestly, it's tough to see much of anything changing. Unless Jones is far worse or Egnew is far better than anticipated, things seem fairly set here. will preview every position prior to the first spring practice.
