Leading up to the Brut Sun Bowl, PowerMizzou.com will take a look at every bowl game in Tiger history. Today, it's the 1970 Orange Bowl.
Only a 31-24 loss to Colorado had kept the 1969 Tigers from an unbeaten regular season. That loss put Missouri down at sixth in the nation rather than playing Penn State for a national title in the 1970 Orange Bowl.
The second-ranked Nittany Lions had national title dreams of their own dashed when Texas won the Cotton Bowl to finish unbeaten earlier in the day. But there was little letdown for Penn State, which stymied the Missouri offense on the way to a 10-3 win.
After a first-quarter field goal, Missouri fumbled the ensuing kickoff. Lydell Mitchell caught a 28-yard scoring pass on the next play and the Tigers could muster only a field goal against the Lion defense.
Turnovers were the story of the day. In addition to two fumbles, the Tigers had a record seven passes intercepted. The nine giveaways kept the Tigers from a second straight win in the Orange Bowl.
