No player at Rivals.com's junior day in Columbia this weekend had a busier day than Mike Whittier. The Webster Groves quarterback made the two-hour trip to Columbia early in the day. He then got back in the car and drove home for the Statesmens' 6 p.m. basketball game against McCluer North.

The game didn't end as Whittier might have wanted. Webster lost a tight one, 48-44. But the future is bright as Whittier begins the recruiting circuit.
"I've been to Mizzou for junior day," said the 6-foot-2, 198-pound quarterback. "I wanted to get to K-State, but I wasn't able to and I missed KU's for basketball. I want to go to Indiana, I plan on it, but I'm not too sure about that."
In addition to those schools, Whittier is also receiving interest from Colorado, Wisconsin and Illinois, among others. Whittier is a good athlete (as evidenced by his 4.5 points and 2.8 rebounds on the basketball court), but nobody envisions him changing positions in college.
"It's just strictly quarterback," he said. "I wish I could play some defense. I play safety, but it's not much. I just want to play."
Whittier threw fro more than 2,300 yards as a junior. But the Statesmen limped to a 4-and-6 finish, and the junior quarterback shouldered the blame.
"I need to get better at finishing games," he said. "We weren't able to run the ball a lot. I had to throw a lot and I know I had a lot of mistakes late in games and that cost our team the season basically. When I make mistakes, that kills the team, so I need to work on just finishing out games."
Whittier does not yet have any scholarship offers.
