After each game, we’ll take a look at three things we learned, two questions we have and one prediction for the rest of the season. Here is the 3-2-1 report after the 79-0 romp over Delaware State.
THREE THINGS WE LEARNED
1. J’Mon Moore is without a doubt this team’s go-to receiver. I mean, having 100 yards and four touchdowns against Delaware State may not be an accomplishment in and of itself, but he’s clearly the No. 1 target for Drew Lock and the leading playmaker on the team.Moore has more than 400 yards and six touchdowns through four games, both of which would have led the team last season.
2. Barry Odom doesn’t have a problem running up the score. He had 58 at half (and could have been more if he’d tried to score on the final possession of the half). He ran a fake punt with a 30-0 lead in the first quarter. Now he let off the gas in the second half, but I’d guess the last guy would have done it much earlier.
3. Damarea Crockett should get a look as the starting running back. He averaged nearly ten yards a carry and scored twice. There’s a role for Ish Witter, but it isn’t above Crockett on the depth chart. The big play ability isn’t there. Now maybe it isn’t with Crockett either. And I’m not saying the performance against Delaware State proves his greatness, but he’s at least earned more carries.
TWO QUESTIONS WE STILL HAVE
1. What’s the point? I’ve been on board with the Big Ten rule of not playing FCS opponents.I don’t see the SEC going that route. But who is served by this? I can’t imagine it was fun for Delaware State. You can’t convince me Mizzou got better. The fans surely aren’t thrilled to have paid for this game. What purpose did this game serve other than making it easier for Missouri to get to a low-level bowl game?
2. What happened to Anthony Sherrils? He didn’t start and, to our knowledge, didn’t play a single defensive snap in the first half. Cam Hilton got the nod at safety. Sherrils was in the game on a fake punt and played in the second half so it wasn’t an injury. He hasn’t been great the first three weeks, but to see that sudden a demotion is a surprise.
ONE BOLD PREDICTION
Drew Lock still has one more 400-yard game in him this year. Kentucky can give up some points. Vandy can too. Lock has put up video game numbers against the two weak sisters on Missouri’s schedule (to be fair Eastern Michigan isn’t nearly as weak as Delaware State) but he’s put some numbers up on Georgia and West Virginia too. He’ll go for 400 at least once more.
