Ten Thoughts for Monday Morning

SIGN UP FOR A SUBSCRIPTION TODAY AND DON'T PAY UNTIL SEPTEMBER

I'm considering renaming this "Some thoughts for Monday morning" because it's getting increasingly difficult to get to ten--and they're certainly not all going to revolve around Mizzou--but we'll see where it goes.

1) I don't know any more about the timing of a college football season than I did last week. But I do feel more confident about one thing: They're not playing college football without fans in the stands. It just isn't going to happen. There are a bunch of reasons for that, but in talking to people, the main one is this: How do you say "It's not really safe for us to put people in the stands, but we're good putting 300 people on the field, 200 of them 18-22 year olds who aren't getting paid and half of whom had to travel to get here and have to stay in a hotel room." It's not gonna happen guys. Maybe we can play normal football with crowds by September. Maybe it takes a few extra weeks. Maybe it gets moved to the spring (this is a plan that has more momentum than people are talking about). But what's not going to happen is games in empty stadiums.

2) So what about games with limited fans? Honestly, I don't see how it works. Let's say you have 50,000 season ticket holders. How do you decide which 40% of them get to go? And do you refund the donations of the other 60%? How do you keep people six feet apart during games? And, again, you're saying, we can't let fans stand close to each other, but we're good having these kids contact each other on every snap for 170 consecutive snaps? Nope. Don't see how that happens either. In other words, they'll play college football when it's deemed they can have fans there to watch it. I don't see them playing before that.

I hope anyone who is interested in this topic takes 30 minutes to watch our interview with Mark Alnutt (or really, just watch like the last 15 which is where we talked bout a lot of this stuff). This is a sitting AD at a Group of Five school with a relatively successful football program. There could not possibly be anything more topical or timely. So I hope you'll watch it.

3) Speaking of actual football, Missouri gained a player and lost another last week. That means the Tigers, by our count, are still at 80 scholarships.
